How Hurricanes Affect Inland Fort Worth

Fort Worth sits roughly 250 miles inland from the Texas Gulf Coast, which means we rarely experience direct hurricane strikes. However, the remnants of hurricanes and tropical storms regularly bring severe weather to the Fort Worth metro area, including torrential rainfall, flash flooding, damaging winds, and tornadoes spawned by the outer bands of these storms. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and Fort Worth homeowners need to take it seriously.

Hurricane Harvey in 2017, while devastating Houston, also brought significant rainfall and flooding to areas of North Texas. Tropical Storm Imelda and other systems have similarly demonstrated that inland cities are not immune to the effects of Gulf storms. Climate patterns indicate these risks may be increasing.

Preparing Your Roof and Exterior

Your roof is your home's first line of defense against storm damage. Before hurricane season, have a professional inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles, deteriorating flashing around vents and chimneys, and weakened areas that could fail under heavy rain or wind. Repair any issues before storm season begins.

Clean all gutters and downspouts, and make sure they direct water at least four to six feet away from your foundation. Check that all exterior doors and windows seal properly. Consider installing storm shutters or at least having plywood cut and labeled for quick installation if a major storm approaches the Fort Worth area.

Addressing Drainage and Foundation Concerns

Fort Worth's expansive clay soils create unique challenges during heavy rain events. Ensure the grading around your home slopes away from the foundation on all sides. A minimum slope of six inches over the first ten feet is recommended. Check for low spots in your yard where water pools during rain and consider regrading or installing French drains.

If your home has a sump pump, test it before storm season and install a battery backup. For homes with persistent water intrusion issues, consider installing an interior drain tile system. These investments pay for themselves many times over by preventing costly water damage restoration.

Creating a Hurricane Season Emergency Kit

Every Fort Worth household should have an emergency kit ready before hurricane season. Include at least three days of water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food and a manual can opener, flashlights and extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio, a first aid kit, essential medications, important documents in a waterproof container, phone chargers and portable battery packs, and cash in small bills.

Add water-damage-specific items to your kit: a submersible utility pump, heavy-duty plastic sheeting, waterproof tape, rubber gloves and boots, and your insurance policy information.

During the Storm: Protecting Your Property

When a tropical system is forecast to impact the Fort Worth area, secure or bring inside all outdoor furniture, decorations, and loose items. Move vehicles into the garage if possible. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings in case of power loss. Fill bathtubs with water for emergency use. Close all interior doors and stay away from windows.

After the Storm: Assessment and Recovery

Once the storm passes and it is safe to go outside, document any damage immediately with photos and video before making temporary repairs. Check your roof from the ground using binoculars — do not climb on a wet roof. Look for water stains on ceilings and walls inside your home, which indicate roof or window leaks.
